WHEREAS, in addition to academic development, schools should strive to develop students' character in an effort to help them become successful and productive citizens; and

WHEREAS, quality character education enables schools to create a safe learning environment and supports academic achievement; and

WHEREAS, a lack of character education leads to increased school violence, disrespect for authority, and self-destructive behaviors; and

WHEREAS, charter education curricula explores topics such as accountability, compassion, confidence, honesty, respect, and self-control; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that Board of Public Education require at least thirty minutes of character education a month in all Metropolitan public schools.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Metropolitan Board of Public Education to include thirty minutes of character education curricula each week in every school.

Section 2. That the Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution by U.S. mail, interdepartmental mail, or electronic mail to Dr. Pedro Garcia, the Director of Schools, and to each member of the Metropolitan Board of Public Education.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
