RESOLUTION NO. RS2005-719

A resolution recognizing heart disease.

WHEREAS, February is designated as American Heart Month; and

WHEREAS, Davidson County declared February 4, 2005, as "Wear Red Day for Women" and encouraged all Davidson County residents to participate and raise public awareness about the leading killer of women in Tennessee - - heart disease; and

WHEREAS, heart disease is the number one killer of women in both Tennessee and across the nation; and

WHEREAS, heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases claim the lives of more than half a million women each year including more than 8,300 in Tennessee and more than 1,000 in Davidson County; and

WHEREAS, 63 percent of women who died suddenly of coronary heart disease had no previous symptoms of this disease; and

WHEREAS, the American Heart Association's "Go Red for Women" campaign is to empower women with the knowledge and tools they need to make positive lifestyle changes that will help reduce their risk of heart disease; and

WHEREAS, we can combat heart disease and live longer and better lives by encouraging women to learn more about heart health by making healthier choices and talking with their doctors about the risk for developing heart disease; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes heart disease and urge all Nashvillians to learn more about heart health and to reduce their risk factors for serious heart conditions.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing heart disease.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Ms. Ashley Wrye, American Heart Association Communications Director on behalf of the entire Nashville office.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
