RESOLUTION NO. RS2005-718

A resolution recognizing the month of March as "Women's History Month" and honoring the Councilwomen who are serving or have served on the Metropolitan Council.

WHEREAS, March is designated as "Women's History Month" and we recognize women throughout history, through conflicts, creation and contributions and celebrate the many ways women strengthen and enrich America; and

WHEREAS, women of every race, class, and ethnic background have made historic contributions to the growth and strength of Davidson County, the state of Tennessee, and our nation; and

WHEREAS, it is appropriate to recognize Frances Doyle, Mrs. Sherman Hunt, Lois Jordan, Betty Nixon, Jo Ann North, Thelma Harper, Gwen McFarland, Pat Frye, Sherry Jones, Lorinda McLaughlin, Edith Taylor Langster, Gayle Ray, Regina Patton, Eileen Beehan, Norma Hand, Michelle Arriola, Janis Sontany, Saletta Holloway, Carolyn Baldwin Tucker, Brenda Gilmore, Bettye Balthrop, Amanda McClendon, Ginger Hausser, Lynn Williams, Diane Neighbors, Pam Murray and Vivian Wilhoite who are serving or have served on the Metropolitan Council of Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County for their determination, dedication, accomplishments, and hard work in making a difference throughout Nashville; and

WHEREAS, American women have played and continue to play economic, cultural, and social roles in our Nation by constituting a significant portion of the labor force working inside and outside of the home; and

WHEREAS, 2005 marks the 157th Anniversary of the Women's Rights Movement, which served as the impetus by which many women's rights were secured: the right to vote, the right to reproductive freedom, improved employment rights and representation; and increasing representation as public officials in all levels of government; and

WHEREAS, 2005 marks the 85th Anniversary of the Women's Right to Vote, in Tennessee, which was a major step toward granting women the right to hold office, exercise their right to vote, and allow women to fully participate in all aspects of American society; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes "Women's History Month" and all women who are serving or have served on the Metropolitan Council for their countless contributions to Nashville.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the month of March as "Women's History Month" and honoring the Councilwomen who are serving or have served on the Metropolitan Council.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Frances Doyle, Mrs. Sherman Hunt, Lois Jordan, Betty Nixon, Jo Ann North, Thelma Harper, Gwen McFarland, Pat Frye, Sherry Jones, Lorinda McLaughlin, Edith Taylor Langster, Gayle Ray, Regina Patton, Eileen Beehan, Norma Hand, Michelle Arriola, Janis Sontany, Saletta Holloway, Carolyn Baldwin Tucker, Brenda Gilmore, Bettye Balthrop, Amanda McClendon, Ginger Hausser, Lynn Williams, Diane Neighbors, Pam Murray and Vivian Wilhoite.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
