RESOLUTION NO. RS2005-715

A resolution recognizing the 35th Anniversary of the Cameron High School State Championship Basketball Team.

WHEREAS, in observance of Black History Month we would like to remember the glory days of the south Nashville community by recognizing the accomplishments of the Cameron High School men's basketball teams of 1970 and 1971 and their commitment to excellence which should be an inspiration to us all; and

WHEREAS, the 1970 and 1971 academic school years brought about a level of community pride never before, nor since experienced, when the legendary Ronnie R. Lawson, Sr., coached the Cameron panthers to back-to-back state championships; and

WHEREAS, in addition to the pride felt by the south Nashville community, their accomplishments received special recognition from both the Mayor's office of Nashville and the Governor's office of the State of Tennessee; and

WHEREAS, through the game of basketball valuable lessons were taught to the members of the team as well as to the student body they represented, like respect for oneself and others, the desire to sacrifice and be prepared and the desire to win; and

WHEREAS, many of the team's members, armed with athletic scholarships, entered institutions of higher learning in pursuit of educational preparedness while others chose different paths to gainful employment; becoming men of integrity while making significant contributions to society as husbands, fathers and men of faith; and

WHEREAS, the Cameron faculty and staff are deserve much credit for their influence upon these young men and the student body, keeping them focused on the goals, while preparing them to become productive citizens of the community; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes this the 35th Anniversary of the first back-to-back championships, won by these young men, we hope that by these proceedings the memory of those glory days are never forgotten and that they be recognized for the significance they played in the lives of the teams, their families, and their community.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the 35th Anniversary of the Cameron High School State Championship Basketball Team.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to the Greater Bethel AME Church and its pastor Reverend Michael D. Broadnax, Sr., for making possible this occasion and that a copy be placed in the Cameron High alumni archives to become a part of its historical record.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
