RESOLUTION NO. RS2005-714

A resolution recognizing Governor Phil Bredesen, State Senator Thelma Harper, State Representative Mary Pruitt, the Museum Task Force and the Board Members of the African-American History Foundation of Nashville, Inc.

WHEREAS, recognizing the extraordinary efforts of Governor Phil Bredesen, State Senator Thelma Harper, State Representative Mary Pruitt, and the Board Members of the African-American History Foundation of Nashville, Inc., led by the Chairmanship Dr. T. B. Boyd, III, for their efforts and accomplishments in securing 3.86 acres of land for Nashville's first African-American museum; and

WHEREAS, the Museum Task Force is instrumental in being the initial research catalyst for the project's feasibility; and

WHEREAS, Nashville's first African-American museum will be built on the northwest corner of Bicentennial Capitol Mall; and

WHEREAS, the African-American History Foundation of Nashville, Inc., is a nonprofit organization whose members have worked hard to promote, create and to ultimately build a museum to serve as a repository for artifacts of local, state, national and international range representing African American culture; and

WHEREAS, when completed this museum will honor the contributions of African-Americans to music, arts, culture and history; and

WHEREAS, the Foundation was created to launch the museum by raising money and getting private solicitations; and

WHEREAS, when completed this museum will serve as an educational facility, a community anchor, a new tourist destination and an economic development engine for Nashville and the entire state; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Governor Phil Bredesen, State Senator Thelma Harper, State Representative Mary Pruitt, the Museum Task Force and the Board Members of the African-American History Foundation of Nashville, Inc., for their role in securing the donation of state owned land to construct an African-American museum.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Governor Phil Bredesen, State Senator Thelma Harper, State Representative Mary Pruitt, the Museum Task Force and the Board Members of the African-American History Foundation of Nashville, Inc.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerks Office is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to Governor Phil Bredesen, State Senator Thelma Harper, State Representative Mary Pruitt, and on behalf of Board members of the African-American History Foundation of Nashville, Inc. Dr. T.B. Boyd III, Chairman.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
