RESOLUTION NO. RS2005-665

A resolution requesting Metro Water Services and Nashville Electric Service to include an insert in the next billing for services providing information to customers about sending contributions to the Nashville Area Red Cross, Tennessee Baptist Disaster Relief, the Hindu Cultural Center of Tennessee, and the Sri Ganesha Temple for the tsunami relief effort.

WHEREAS, on December 27, 2004, an earthquake occurred in the Indian Ocean creating a tsunami that devastated coastal areas in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand; and

WHEREAS, recent reports estimate that as many as 150,000 people perished as a result of the tsunami, making it one of the largest natural disasters in recorded history; and

WHEREAS, over forty countries have pledged support for the tsunami relief efforts, as well as many private businesses and charitable organizations; and

WHEREAS, many citizens in Nashville and Davidson County are searching for ways in which they can contribute to aid in sending food, water, and medical supplies to the survivors of the tsunami; and

WHEREAS, Metro Water Services provides water to over 155,000 homes and businesses, and Nashville Electric Service provides electricity to 325,000 customers in Middle Tennessee; and

WHEREAS, including an insert in water and electric bills would be an efficient, cost-effective method of providing the public with information about entities accepting contributions for tsunami relief efforts.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting Metro Water Services and Nashville Electric Service to include an insert in the next billing for services providing information to customers about sending contributions to the Nashville Area Red Cross, Tennessee Baptist Disaster Relief, the Hindu Cultural Center of Tennessee, and the Sri Ganesha Temple for the tsunami relief effort.

Section 2. That the Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution by United States mail, interdepartmental mail or electronic mail to Scott Potter, the Director of the Department of Water and Sewerage Services, and to Decosta Jenkins, the President and CEO of Nashville Electric Service.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
