RESOLUTION NO. RS2005-657

A resolution recognizing Teresa Evetts Horton upon her retirement with the Metropolitan Government.

WHEREAS, on January 2, 2005, Teresa Evetts Horton, Director of the Nashville Convention Center, retired after thirty-three years and is well deserving of this recognition; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Horton began her career in 1972 as an Administrative Assistant in the Metro Human Resources Department (formerly known as Personnel Department) where she served until 1985; she was responsible and oversaw the development to centralize Metro personnel files, accounting/payroll systems, and administrative support services in a secure location, respectfully known as “Fort Jackson”; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Horton transferred to the Nashville Convention Center in 1985, holding the positions of Business Manager, Assistant Director, then Executive Director in 1991, a position which she held with distinction; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Horton was the Nashville Convention Center’s first employee and helped start-up the $45.5 million center, which now offers some of the most advanced technical services of any convention site in the country, having designed all accounting, computer operations, and policy/procedures for the facility; and

WHEREAS, during her tenure as Executive Director some of her major accomplishments included the successfully management of the $7 million operation of the Center, never requesting monies from the General Fund, fulfilling the mission of the facility to serve the community as an economic stimulus by bringing in over $857 million in economic impact and 5 million visitors to the City of Nashville while participating in the development and execution of the Nashville Convention Center Broadway Connector in January 1987; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Horton has been actively involved with many community and civic organizations where she served on the Board of Director for the Greater Nashville Hotel & Lodging Association, Nashville Sports Authority, Goodwill Industries, Nashville Symphony Hall Advisory Committee, member of the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, CABLE, Metropolitan Procurement Board; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Horton served in many capacities with other prominent industry organizations such as the International Association of Assembly Managers (IAAM) Board of Directors, IAAM Scholarships Committee, IAAM Ogelbay Alumni Association Committee, IAAM Nominating Committee, Meeting Planners International (MPI), Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA) and American Association of Association Executives (ASAE); and

WHEREAS, Ms. Horton received accolades and recognition from the convention industry, and was featured in an article in the International Association of Assembly Managers’ (IAAM) Facility Managers magazine, entitled, “Women In Industry”; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Horton is to be commended for her timeless efforts for the City of Nashville and will sorely be missed not only as the director but for her leadership, dedication and professionalism to the convention industry; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Teresa Evetts Horton for her work and accomplishments with Nashville Convention Center and wishes her much joy in retirement.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Teresa Evetts Horton upon her retirement from with the Metropolitan Government.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerks Office is directed to prepare a hand-lettered scroll to be presented to Teresa Evetts Horton.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
