RESOLUTION NO. RS2005-656

A resolution recognizing Governor Phil Bredesen for creating the Governor's Interagency Council on Homelessness to address the issue of homelessness in Tennessee.

WHEREAS, on December 9, 2004, Governor Phil Bredesen signed an executive order creating the Governor’s Interagency Council on Homelessness to coordinate efforts between the state and community resources to address homelessness in Tennessee; and

WHEREAS, according to a statement issued by Governor Bredesen, approximately 10,000 homeless men, women, and children are on Tennessee streets each night; and

WHEREAS, the recently released U.S. Conference of Mayors - Sudexho USA Hunger and Homelessness 2004 Survey reports that Nashville has experienced a fifteen percent increase in requests by families for emergency shelter, and that approximately ten percent of the shelter requests by homeless persons in Nashville went unmet; and

WHEREAS, the Governor’s Interagency Council on Homelessness will include the Governor and the commissioners/directors of various state departments and agencies; and

WHEREAS, this new council will work with the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness to develop a long-term plan to improve the coordination of and access to various housing, health, and education programs for the homeless; and

WHEREAS, since taking office in 2003, the eleventh Metropolitan Council has adopted several resolutions supporting efforts to address the homeless situation in Nashville; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize Governor Bredesen for his leadership and initiative in addressing homelessness in Tennessee.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Governor Phil Bredesen for creating the Governor’s Interagency Council on Homelessness to address the issue of homelessness in Tennessee.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to Governor Phil Bredesen.Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
