RESOLUTION NO. RS2005-1102
A resolution proclaiming Saturday, December 17, 2005, as "Homeless Memorial Day" in Nashville, Tennessee.
WHEREAS, the city of Nashville recognizes and respects all citizens; and
WHEREAS, on Saturday, December 17, 2005, the city of Nashville will come together at Riverfront Park for a public memorial service; and
WHEREAS, this day is the 15th annual National Homeless Memorial Day celebration; and
WHEREAS, this gathering will remember and honor those homeless whose life's journey has come to a tragic end; and
WHEREAS, some of Nashville's homeless citizens die alone on the streets each year and some of the citizens have been or are currently living homeless; and
WHEREAS, adequate housing is essential for healthy families and communities; and
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council will continue to memorialize those lost in the street until it has identified sufficient resources and solutions to ensure that all residents of Nashville have a safe place to sleep and mechanisms for stepping out of homelessness; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes December 17, 2005, as Homeless Memorial Day and urge all citizens to learn more about the housing crisis facing our state.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as proclaiming December 17, 2005, as "Homeless Memorial Day" in Nashville, Tennessee.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to the Homeless Power Project on behalf on the Homeless Community.
Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
