RESOLUTION NO. RS2005-1096

A resolution requesting the Mayor, the Director of Finance, and the Director of Public Property Administration to take the action necessary to provide additional public parking in the riverfront area.

WHEREAS, many citizens have indicated that they would be more likely to attend downtown entertainment events and patronize downtown eating establishments if more parking was available; and

WHEREAS, frequent events at the Coliseum, the Gaylord Entertainment Center, the Ryman Auditorium, the Tennessee Performing Arts Center, and other entertainment venues fill the downtown area with vehicles, often making parking inconvenient for the public; and

WHEREAS, the Nashville Sounds have proposed the construction of a new downtown minor league baseball stadium, which will further increase parking demands in the downtown area; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Government has made great strides in the enhancement of the riverfront area through the construction of the Riverfront Park greenway and the new pedestrian bridge; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Government increase public parking opportunities in the downtown area to accommodate the revitalization and growth in downtown Nashville.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Mayor, the Director of Finance, and the Director of Public Property Administration to take the action necessary to provide additional public parking in the riverfront area.

Section 2. The Mayor, the Director of Finance, and the Director of Public Property Administration are further requested to respond to the Council within sixty (60) days from the date of the adoption of this Resolution as to the feasibility of and/or action taken in compliance with the request in Section 1 hereof.

Section 3. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to Mayor Bill Purcell, to David Manning, the Director of Finance, and to Ken Maynard, the Director of Public Property Administration.

Section 4. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
