RESOLUTION NO. RS2005-1093

A resolution requesting the Mayor and the Chief of Police to examine the feasibility of constructing a police precinct in southeast Davidson County, and to consider reassigning additional officers to patrol the southeastern portion of the county.

WHEREAS, since being appointed as Chief of Police in January 2004, Ronal W. Serpas has made great strides to increase police presence in the community and to make Nashville a safer city in which to live and work; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Government recently constructed a new police precinct located at 2231 26th Avenue North to serve the North Nashville area; and

WHEREAS, the southeastern portion of Davidson County is the fastest growing area of the county, with many new housing developments currently under construction; and

WHEREAS, southeast Davidson County is currently served by the Hermitage Police Precinct, which is more than ten miles from the southeastern portion of the county; and

WHEREAS, according to crime statistics published by the Metropolitan Police Department for the time period between January and June 2004, the zip codes comprising District 29 alone reported 597 violent crimes and 3,241 property crimes; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department examine the feasibility of constructing a police precinct and reassigning additional officers in the southeastern portion of Davidson County serving Council Districts 29, 32 and 33 to help reduce and prevent criminal activity in this rapidly growing area.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Mayor and the Chief of Police to examine the feasibility of constructing a police precinct in southeast Davidson County, and to consider reassigning additional officers to patrol the southeastern portion of the county.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to Mayor Bill Purcell and to Police Chief Ronal W. Serpas.

Section 3. The Mayor and the Chief of Police are further requested to respond to the Council as to the feasibility of and/or action taken in compliance with the request in Section 1 within sixty (60) days from the date of adoption of this Resolution.

Section 4. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
