RESOLUTION NO. RS2005-1092

A resolution requesting the Mayor, the Metropolitan Board of Public Education, and the Director of Schools to take the action necessary to ensure that funding for the construction of a new high school in the Antioch area is included as part of the capital spending plan for fiscal year 2006-2007.

WHEREAS, over the past several years, the Antioch area has seen rapid growth in development, which has resulted in a dramatic increase in population; and

WHEREAS, unfortunately, the school capacity in the Antioch area has failed to keep pace with the recent escalation in the number of students who attend the schools; and

WHEREAS, the recently constructed Antioch High School was considered overcrowded on the day it opened; and

WHEREAS, Antioch High School was constructed for a student capacity of 2,000 but has 2,500 students attending the school this year; and

WHEREAS, the Board of Public Education recommended to the Mayor that the construction of a new high school in the Antioch area be included as part of the 2005-2006 capital spending plan to be funded through the issuance of general obligation bonds; and

WHEREAS, the Mayor's capital spending recommendation ultimately approved by the Council included the acquisition of land for a new Antioch high school, but did not provide sufficient funding to construct a new school; and

WHEREAS, the Antioch area is in desperate need of a new high school to relieve the overcrowding that is having a negative impact on the education of the children in the area.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Mayor, the Metropolitan Board of Public Education, and the Director of Schools to take the action necessary to ensure that funding for the construction of a new high school in the Antioch area is included as part of the capital spending plan for fiscal year 2006-2007.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to the Mayor, to each member of the Board of Public Education, and to the Director of Schools.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
