A resolution requesting the Emergency Medical Services Division of the Nashville Fire Department to organize and promote an ICE campaign in Nashville and Davidson County to aid in emergency treatment.

WHEREAS, a movement is underway in the United States and Europe to turn person's cellular telephones into a source of emergency contact information for emergency personnel responding to accidents and other medical emergencies; and

WHEREAS, this program known by the acronym ICE ("in case of emergency") was originated by a paramedic in England in an effort to ensure that injured persons have adequate emergency contact information so that their loved ones can be notified in the event of an emergency; and

WHEREAS, the ICE program involves cell phone users inputting an entry into their cellular phonebook called "ICE", which would include the name and phone numbers of the person who should be contacted in the event of an emergency; and

WHEREAS, local emergency service providers across the country are embracing the ICE campaign, and are making an effort to promote the idea in their communities; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Nashville Fire Department undertake a promotional campaign to inform citizens of Nashville and Davidson County about the ICE program, and encourage them to input the necessary emergency contact information into their cellular telephones and record and maintain information about their ICE partner.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Emergency Medical Services Division of the Nashville Fire Department to organize and promote an ICE campaign in Nashville and Davidson County to aid in emergency treatment.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to Fire Chief Stephen Halford and to EMS Bureau Chief Steven Meador.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
