RESOLUTION NO. RS2005-1046

A resolution recognizing and congratulating Glenn Yeager, Coach Frank Kremblas, and the players and staff of the Nashville Sounds for winning the 2005 Pacific Coast League Championship.

WHEREAS, baseball is America's favorite pastime and has played a major role in our country's history; and

WHEREAS, every spring, with the crack of the bat and the pop of the mitt, the baseball season begins anew with the hope of each and every team of winning a championship; and

WHEREAS, our Nashville Sounds have been a part of Nashville's sports history for the past twenty-eight years, bringing fun and excitement to hundreds of thousands fans every year; and

WHEREAS, the Sounds, over the years, have provided Nashville with great players that went on to become star major league ballplayers and managers; and

WHEREAS, this year, in the club's first season as the Milwaukee Brewers' top affiliate, the Nashville Sounds began its season with seven of the Brew Crew's top 10 prospects, including second baseman Rickie Weeks and first baseman Prince Fielder, both of whom were ranked among the top 15 minor league prospects; and

WHEREAS, through the season, the team took a never-say-die attitude, recording twenty-three of its 75 wins in the club's last-at-bat and rallying for an amazing 19 victories in games in which the Sounds were trailing in the seventh inning or later; and

WHEREAS, Nashville drew its highest fan total in 12 years and saw an increase at the turnstiles for the fifth consecutive year, drawing over 419,000 fans in 2005; and

WHEREAS, the Sounds finished the regular season with a 75-69 record, winning the PCL American Conference Northern Division by three games over Omaha; and

WHEREAS, the Sounds advanced to the American Conference Finals where they defeated American Southern Division winner Oklahoma City three games to two therefore advancing to the Pacific Coast League Championships; and

WHEREAS, the Nashville Sounds swept Tacoma in three games in the PCL Championship with outfielder Nelson Cruz propelling the Sounds to victory in the deciding Game Three with a three-rum homer in the top of the 13th inning; and

WHEREAS, that Championship is the Sounds' first in the sixteen-team Pacific Coast League and their third league championship in the team's history; and

WHEREAS, the Nashville Sounds were led to the Championship under the guidance and direction of Coach Frank Kremblas and their general manager, Glenn Yeager.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing and congratulating Glenn Yeager, Coach Frank Kremblas, and the players and staff of the Nashville Sounds for winning the 2005 Pacific Coast League Championship.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Glenn Yeager, general manager of the Nashville Sounds.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
