RESOLUTION NO. RS2005-1044

A resolution recognizing Father Ryan High School and their efforts in accepting displaced students related to Hurricane Katrina.

WHEREAS, Father Ryan High School has been recognized nationally and reported in the Congressional Record for its exemplary response to the needs of students displaced by Hurricane Katrina; and

WHEREAS, many displaced families with school-aged children who urgently need to be placed in educational environments and school facilities during an extended time may be forced to be away from their homes and schools; and

WHEREAS, Catholic schools across the nation have opened their doors to Gulf Coast students displaced by Hurricane Katrina; and Father Ryan is the only co-educational Catholic high school in Nashville and Davidson County; and

WHEREAS, under the leadership and efforts of Principal Jim McIntyre, Father Ryan High School has demonstrated their resilience, generosity and humanitarian spirit in thus far accepting twenty-one displaced students of Hurricane Katrina; and

WHEREAS, Father Ryan High School has offered free tuition and fees, recognizing the financial difficulties already facing the displaced families who are seeking to continue their children's education and will try to accommodate every student who shows up; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Father Ryan High School on their commitment to help those in need.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Father Ryan High School and their efforts in accepting displaced students related to Hurricane Katrina.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Father Ryan High School Principal Jim McIntyre on behalf of the school.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
