RESOLUTION NO. RS2005-1008

A resolution requesting the Mayor's Office, the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Convention and Visitors Bureau to work to bring the National League of Cities annual convention back to Nashville in 2007.

WHEREAS, the National League of Cities (NLC) holds a national convention, known as the "Congress of Cities and Exposition", each December in a different city each year; and

WHEREAS, the NLC partners with the host city to develop educational programs for the convention attendees, which allows the city to display and promote its accomplishments; and

WHEREAS, Nashville, Tennessee served as the host city for the NLC annual convention in December 2003; and

WHEREAS, the 2003 NLC convention in Nashville brought thousands of local elected officials from across the nation, which not only boosted our local economy, but enhanced Nashville's national image; and

WHEREAS, the NLC annual convention will be held in Charlotte, North Carolina in December 2005, and Reno, Nevada in December 2006, but the host city for 2007 has yet to be determined; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the City of Nashville make a concerted effort to bring the NLC annual convention back to Nashville, Tennessee in 2007.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Mayor's Office, the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Convention and Visitors Bureau to work to bring the National League of Cities annual convention back to Nashville in 2007.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to Mayor Bill Purcell, to each member of the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce board, and to Butch Spyridon, the president of the Nashville Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Section 3. That the Mayor, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Convention and Visitors Bureau are further requested to respond to the Council as to the feasibility of and/or action taken in compliance with the request stated in Section 1 hereof within sixty (60) days from the adoption of this Resolution.

Section 4. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
