RESOLUTION NO. RS2004-653

A resolution recognizing the contributions, services and memory of Councilman Chester Hughes of Nashville, Tennessee.

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council, as well as the constituents in District 3, were saddened to learn of the passing of Councilman Chester Hughes, on December 18, 2004, and we recognize his contributions as a tireless public servant; and

WHEREAS, after several years of demonstrated service to the community, in 2003 Mr. Chester Hughes entered the political arena being elected as Councilman of District 3 to serve in the 11th Metropolitan Council; and

WHEREAS, he was elected to office by those who saw him as a leader that would be considerate of the wishes of his constituents; and

WHEREAS, during his Council term he served on the Health, Hospitals and Social Services, Public Works and Rules-Confirmations Committees of the Metro Council; and

WHEREAS, after being elected, Councilman Chester Hughes diligently sought to improve conditions for his constituents in a most capable and dedicated fashion; and

WHEREAS, Councilman Chester Hughes was a dedicated state employee who worked as the records management director for Tennessee Department of General Services for 19 years; and

WHEREAS, Councilman Chester Hughes is survived by his wife Helen his soul mate, and two children, Jameel Hughes and LaTia Hughes, and was a member of The Victory Church; and

WHEREAS, the passing of Councilman Chester Hughes leaves a void in the lives of his family, church, colleagues, and the constituents of the 3rd District; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council expresses to the family and friends of Councilman Chester Hughes our deepest sympathy.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the contributions, services and memory of Councilman Chester Hughes of Nashville, Tennessee.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to the family of Councilman Chester Hughes.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
