RESOLUTION NO. RS2004-610

A resolution requesting the Mayor’s Office, the Metropolitan Chief of Police, the Traffic and Parking Commission, the Tennessee Department of Transportation, and the Tennessee Department of Safety to develop a plan to reduce speed related traffic accidents in Nashville and Davidson County.

WHEREAS, Nashville is the hub for Interstates 24, 65, and 40, and is home to over 2,200 miles of local roads and 276 miles of state highways; and

WHEREAS, as a result of Nashville’s population and its geographical location, there is a high volume of traffic on Davidson County roads and highways each day; and

WHEREAS, since being appointed as Chief of Police in January 2004, Ronal W. Serpas has made a concerted effort to increase the enforcement of motor vehicle laws in Davidson County; and

WHEREAS, over the past several months, several accidents caused by speeding drivers have resulted in fatalities on our roads and highways; and

WHEREAS, since there is still work to be done to reduce the number of speed related accidents in Nashville and Davidson County, it is fitting and proper that local and state officials work together to develop a plan to combat this serious safety issue to help protect the motoring public.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Mayor’s Office, the Metropolitan Chief of Police, the Traffic and Parking Commission, the Tennessee Department of Transportation, and the Tennessee Department of Safety to develop a plan to reduce speed related traffic accidents in Nashville and Davidson County.
