RESOLUTION NO. RS2004-561

A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Board of Public Education and the Director of Schools to consider providing incentives for parents to spend four hours a month at their child’s school.

WHEREAS, it has been proven that parental involvement in a child’s education has a direct correlation to success in the classroom; and

WHEREAS, a study by the Institute for Responsive Education suggests that some positive results of parental involvement in a child’s education include improved achievement, reduced absenteeism, improved behavior, and restored confidence among parents in their child’s schooling; and

WHEREAS, the Board of Education currently provides various opportunities for citizens, businesses, and other organizations to become involved in strengthening public education; and

WHEREAS, providing incentives to parents to spend time at their child’s school would encourage parental involvement and promote a stronger learning environment; and

WHEREAS, such parent incentives could include bonus points toward a child’s grade or other form of reward for the child; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Board of Public Education consider providing incentives to encourage parental involvement.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Metropolitan Board of Public Education and the Director of Schools to consider providing incentives for parents to spend four hours a month at their child’s school.

Section 2. That the Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to each member of the Metropolitan Board of Public Education and to Director of Schools Dr. Pedro Garcia.

Section 3. That the Metropolitan Board of Public Education and the Director of Schools are further requested to respond to the Council as to the feasibility of and/or actions taken in compliance with the request stated in Section 1 hereof within sixty (60) days from the adoption of this Resolution.

Section 4. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.

Mr. President:

I move to amend Resolution No. RS2004-561 by deleting the fifth recital clause in its entirety, which reads “WHEREAS, such parent incentives could include bonus points toward a child’s grade or other form of reward for the child; and”.
