RESOLUTION NO. RS2004-534

A resolution requesting the Tennessee Congressional Delegation to support legislation implementing the National Affordable Housing Trust Fund Act, and to sign on to the discharge petition to move the legislation forward.

WHEREAS, there is currently a severe affordable housing shortage in the United States that is impacting millions of Americans; and

WHEREAS, H.R. 1102, currently pending in the United States House of Representatives, would establish a National Affordable Housing Trust Fund; and

WHEREAS, the purposes of the National Affordable Housing Trust Fund are to fill the growing gap in the national ability to build affordable housing by using profits generated by federal housing programs to fund additional housing activities, to enable rental housing to be built in areas with the greatest economic opportunities, to promote homeownership for low-income families, and to build and preserve 1.5 million units of affordable rental housing over the next decade; and

WHEREAS, H.R. 1102 has been stalled in the House Financial Services Committee; and

WHEREAS, a discharge petition (H.Res. 748) has been filed in an effort to move the National Affordable Housing Trust Fund legislation out of committee and onto the floor of the House for debate and a vote; and

WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of the citizens of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County that the Tennessee Congressional Delegation support legislation establishing the National Affordable Housing Trust Fund.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Tennessee Congressional Delegation to support legislation implementing the National Affordable Housing Trust Fund Act, and to sign on to the discharge petition to move the legislation forward.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to each member of the Tennessee Congressional Delegation.

Section 3. That this resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
