RESOLUTION NO. RS2004-531
A resolution proclaiming October 18-22, 2004, National Racial Equality week in the City of Nashville, Tennessee.
WHEREAS, the National League of Cities is committed to promoting racial equality and justice as a fundamental aspect of a healthy community and has proclaimed October 18th – 22nd as National Racial Equality Week; and
WHEREAS, by Act of Congress of the United States dated July 2, 1964, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was adopted banning discrimination because of a person's color, race, national origin, religion, or sex; and
WHEREAS, by Act of Congress of the United States dated July 9, 1868, the 14th Amendment of the Constitution of the United States was adopted giving all persons born or naturalized in the United States the right to due process and equal protection under the law; and
WHEREAS, the Metro Human Relations Commission is committed to promoting and respecting the personal dignity of all people and invite local officials and the community to reaffirm their commitment to promote racial equality and justice and advocate equal rights for all; and
WHEREAS, during National Racial Equality Week, the Metro Human Relations Commission will engage city officials, metro employees, youth, and citizens in activities to foster dialogue to advance our vision of “One City All People”; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes and declares the week of October 18-22, 2004 as National Racial Equality week in the City of Nashville and urges all citizens of Nashville to join together to support and sustain this effort.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as proclaiming October 18-22, 2004, National Racial Equality week in the City of Nashville, Tennessee.
Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
