A resolution requesting the Mayor and the Department of Public Works to examine the feasibility of posting fasten seatbelt signs along Metro streets and roads.

WHEREAS, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, seatbelts have been proven to be the single most effective safety device to prevent serious injury resulting from an automobile accident; and

WHEREAS, the Tennessee General Assembly recently enacted a law making the failure to wear a seatbelt a primary offense in Tennessee; and

WHEREAS, the Tennessee Department of Transportation has caused signs to be erected along Tennessee interstates reminding motorists that the use of seatbelts is required by law; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Mayor and the Department of Public Works examine the feasibility of posting similar signs along Metro streets and roads reminding motorists to buckle-up for safety.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Mayor and the Department of Public Works to examine the feasibility of posting fasten seatbelt signs along Metro streets and roads.

Section 2. The Mayor and the Department of Public Works are further requested to respond to the Council as to the feasibility of and/or action taken in compliance with the request stated in Section 1 hereof not later than sixty (60) days from the date of adoption of this Resolution.

Section 3. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to Mayor Bill Purcell and to Billy Lynch, the acting director of the Department of Public Works.

Section 4. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
