RESOLUTION NO. RS2004-519

A resolution requesting the Office of Emergency Management to schedule and conduct emergency preparedness workshops in every Councilmanic District for the purpose of educating the citizens of Nashville about how to prepare and how to handle any potential emergencies.

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council has approved hundreds of thousands of dollars of grant funds to the Metro’s Office of Emergency Preparedness, some of which is specifically designated to be used in preparing the citizens of Nashville about how to prepare for emergencies; and

WHEREAS, the Office of Emergency Management has already started the process of education, holding initial training, and preparing a video that has now been placed for viewing purposes on Metro Channel 3; and

WHEREAS, as this country observes the third anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, the lessons that this country and the citizens of Nashville learned from that day still hold true including the fact that we must always be prepared; and

WHEREAS, it is the responsibility of the Council of Metro to work together with the Office of Emergency Management to take all steps necessary so that the citizens of Nashville know where to turn, what to do, where to go, and how to respond in case of any type of emergency; and

WHEREAS, the Council acknowledges the work of other agencies, both governmental and non-governmental, that are helping in this cause, such as the Metropolitan Department of Health and the Nashville Chapter of the American Red Cross, and would ask that the Office of Emergency Management pull in all available resources in putting on these workshops.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Office of Emergency Management of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County set meetings in every Councilmanic District in order to provide training to all interested citizens about how to handle emergency situations.

A schedule of such meetings shall be made available to all Members of the Metropolitan Council.

Section 3. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to the Director of the Office of Emergency Management.
