RESOLUTION NO. RS2004-509
A resolution requesting the Davidson County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly to introduce and enact the necessary legislation to allow the Metropolitan Government to require that teachers in grades 7 through 12 have a degree in the subject in which they teach.
WHEREAS, Tennessee Code Annotated §49-5-101 provides that no person shall be employed as a teacher in a public elementary or high school unless such person has obtained a license to teach from the state board of education; and
WHEREAS, Tennessee Code Annotated §49-5-5603 provides that licenses to teach shall only be granted to those persons who have graduated from an institution certified by the state department of education; and
WHEREAS, state law does not require that teachers in grades 7 through 12 have a degree in the subject that they teach; and
WHEREAS, requiring such teachers to have a degree in the subject they are teaching would better ensure the public that all teachers have been adequately trained and are competent to teach that particular subject.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Davidson County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly to introduce and enact the necessary legislation to allow the Metropolitan Government to require that teachers in grades 7 through 12 have a degree in the subject in which they teach.
Section 2. That the Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to each member of the Davidson County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly.
Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
