RESOLUTION NO. RS2004-428

A resolution requesting the Davidson County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly to introduce and enact the necessary legislation to reduce the number of required days for early voting.

WHEREAS, Tennessee Code Annotated §2-6-101, et seq., provides a means for qualified voters to cast their votes prior to the designated election day; and

WHEREAS, state law provides that the period for early voting is to be fifteen days, commencing no earlier than twenty days and ending no less than five days prior the election; and

WHEREAS, as a result of the required fifteen day period and the costs associated therewith, the Davidson County Election Commission is limited in the number of early voting available to the voting public; and

WHEREAS, a reduction in the number of required early voting days would help lower costs associated with early voting and would enable county election commissions to increase the number of early voting sites; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Tennessee General Assembly enact the necessary legislation to reduce the number of required early voting days.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Davidson County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly to introduce and enact the necessary legislation to reduce the number of required days for early voting.

Section 2. That the Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to each member of the Davidson County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
