A resolution requesting the Mayor, the Director of Tourism, and the Nashville Convention and Visitors Bureau to collaborate and report to the Council regarding the feasibility of and actions required to locate a major destination family theme park in Nashville.

WHEREAS, tourism and related activities are a cornerstone of the local economy in Nashville, Tennessee; and

WHEREAS, the hospitality industry is Nashville’s second largest industry, with more than 32,000 hotel and motel rooms; and

WHEREAS, in order for the tourist industry to remain viable, it is necessary that Nashville continue to be known as a “destination” city; and

WHEREAS, Nashville, Tennessee has not had a major destination family theme park since the closing of Opryland, USA in the fall of 1997; and

WHEREAS, some reports have indicated that the location of a major theme park in Nashville could have an overall economic impact on the city in excess of $300 million; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Government take whatever action is necessary to attract a major destination theme park to Nashville, Tennessee.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Mayor, the Director of Tourism, and the Nashville Convention and Visitors Bureau to report to the Council regarding the feasibility of and actions required to locate a major destination family theme park in Nashville.

Section 2. That the Mayor, the Director of Tourism, and the Nashville Convention and Visitors Bureau are further requested to submit such report to the Council within 120 days from the date of adoption of this Resolution.

Section 3. That the Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to Mayor Bill Purcell, to Emmett Edwards, the Director of Tourism, and to each member of the Nashville Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Section 4. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.

Mr. President:

I move to amend Resolution No. RS2004-427 by deleting the phrase“120 days”,

wherein it appears in Section 2, and substituting in lieu thereof the phrase “180 days”.
