A resolution proclaiming August 19, 2004, as the commemoration of Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee’s Silver Anniversary.

WHEREAS, twenty-five years ago, Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee began serving hungry people as a distribution center designed to collect food that would otherwise be wasted; inspect and sort that food; and distribute it to soup kitchens, pantries and shelters serving the hungry; and

WHEREAS, the food bank has been housed in three facilities, beginning in a small school and continuing to expand its services each year to serve greater numbers of hungry Middle Tennesseans; and

WHEREAS, Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee recently built a state-of-the-art facility in MetroCenter that has the ability to store 77 truckloads of non-perishable food and 54 truckloads of perishable food with 12,000 square feet of freezer/cooler space; and

WHEREAS, the food bank now produces nourishing meals for non-profit agencies across the nation with its Cook-Chill facility; and

WHEREAS, Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee now provides job training in its Community Kitchen for individuals who otherwise might not have such opportunities; and

WHEREAS, Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee distributed more than 13 million pounds of food during its last fiscal year compared to 160,000 pounds of food in its first year; and

WHEREAS, Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee was named Affiliate of the Year for 2003 by America’s Second Harvest, making it the number one food bank in the nation; and

WHEREAS, Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee has provided food to nonprofit agencies in 37 counties throughout its existence and has just begun serving an additional nine counties; and

WHEREAS, the city of Nashville has been an integral part of the development of the organization, from individual donors to Metro support including Mayor Bill Purcell’s devotion to the issue of hunger as current chair of the United States Conference of Mayors’ Task Force on Hunger and Homelessness; and

WHEREAS, Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee has invited the community to a birthday party in commemoration of its 25 years of service for Thursday, August 19 from 3 to 5 p.m.

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council hereby acknowledges the commitment and dedication of Second Harvest Food Bank, its staff, board, donors and volunteers in their efforts toward fighting hunger in Middle Tennessee.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as proclaiming August 19, 2004, as the commemoration of Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee’s Silver Anniversary.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
