RESOLUTION NO. RS2004-346

A resolution requesting the Mayor’s Office and the Metropolitan Arts Commission to cause the construction of a monument commemorating D-Day and Nashville’s Sister City relationship with the City of Caen, France.

WHEREAS, on June 6, 1944, a date commonly known as “D-Day”, troops from the United States, Great Britain, and Canada landed on five different beaches in Normandy, France; and

WHEREAS, the storming of the beaches of Normandy was the turning point in the World War II European theatre and was the first step toward the Allied Forces’ ultimate victory in Europe; and

WHEREAS, Nashville has a Sister City relationship with Caen, France; and

WHEREAS, as a result of the D-Day invasion by the Allied Forces, the City of Caen was liberated from German occupation; and

WHEREAS, Chapter 5.10 of the Metropolitan Code of Laws provides for the financing of public art projects from one percent of the net proceeds of general obligation bonds issued to fund construction projects; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Government use some of the one percent bond funds set aside for public art projects to construct an appropriate monument commemorating D-Day and Nashville’s Sister City relationship with the City of Caen, France.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Mayor’s Office and the Metropolitan Arts Commission to cause the construction of a monument commemorating D-Day and Nashville’s Sister City relationship with the City of Caen, France.

Section 2. That the Mayor’s Office and the Metropolitan Arts Commission is further requested to respond to the Council within sixty (60) days from the date of adoption of this resolution as to the feasibility of and/or action taken in response to the request in Section 1 hereof.

Section 3. That the Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to Mayor Bill Purcell and to each member of the Metropolitan Arts Commission.

Section 4. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
