RESOLUTION NO. RS2004-344

A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Board of Public Education to apply for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency school bus retrofit project grant.

WHEREAS, although school buses provide safe and necessary transportation for children to school, pollution from diesel school bus engines has negative health and environmental implications; and

WHEREAS, pollution from diesel engines can be reduced by a process known as “retrofitting”, which fits diesel engines with devices such as oxidation catalysts and diesel particulate filters; and

WHEREAS, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is currently accepting applications for the Clean School Bus USA school bus retrofit project grant; and

WHEREAS, the deadline for the acceptance of applications for the EPA school bus retrofit grant is July 2, 2004; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Board of Education take the appropriate action to apply for the EPA Clean School Bus USA school bus retrofit project grant.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Metropolitan Board of Public Education to apply for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency school bus retrofit project grant.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to each member of the Metropolitan Board of Public Education and to Dr. Pedro Garcia, the Director of Schools.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
