RESOLUTION NO. RS2004-342

A resolution requesting the Mayor, the Mayor’s Office of Economic and Community Development, the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Partnership, and The DISTRICT to develop a marketing plan for the Nashville and Middle Tennessee area to encourage visitors to come downtown.

WHEREAS, the downtown Nashville area has much to offer both tourists and local residents in the form of eating establishments, retail locations, and entertainment venues; and

WHEREAS, many of the downtown business establishments are experiencing a decline in patronage due to the present economic downturn; and

WHEREAS, the continued existence of Nashville’s downtown merchants is necessary to the viability of the entire downtown area; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Government and its partnering agencies should strive to do all that is possible to preserve the economic vitality of the downtown Nashville area; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that a marketing plan for the Nashville and Middle Tennessee area be developed to encourage visitors to come downtown and support the downtown places of business.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Mayor, the Mayor’s Office of Economic and Community Development, the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Partnership, and The DISTRICT to develop a marketing plan for the Nashville and Middle Tennessee area to encourage visitors to come downtown.

Section 2. That the Mayor, the Mayor’s Office of Economic and Community Development, the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Partnership, and The DISTRICT are further requested to respond to the Council within sixty (60) days from the date of the adoption of this Resolution as to the feasibility of and/or action taken in compliance with the requested stated in Section 1 hereof.

Section 3. That the Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to Mayor Bill Purcell, to Tom Jurkovich, the Director of the Mayor’s Office of Economic and Community Development, to Tom Turner, Executive Director of the Downtown Partnership, to Brenda Sanderson, President of The DISTRICT, and to Butch Spyridon, the Director of the Nashville Convention and Visitors Bureau, and to Mike Neal, the President and CEO of the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce.

Section 4. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
