RESOLUTION NO. RS2004-323
A resolution requesting the Mayor and the Director of Finance to consider purchasing the Red Grooms Tennessee Fox Trot Carousel rather than expending $500,000 to relocate it.
WHEREAS, the Tennessee Fox Trot Carousel was designed and created by Nashville native artist Red Grooms in 1998; and
WHEREAS, the Tennessee Fox Trot Carousel has been in storage for the past year and a half at an enclosed pavilion at Riverfront Park; and
WHEREAS, the Tennessee General Assembly appropriated $350,000 in the State’s fiscal year 2004-2005 budget to purchase the Carousel from Tennessee Fox Trot Corp., and relocate it to Nashville’s Bicentennial Capitol Mall; and
WHEREAS, on December 18, 2001, the Metropolitan Council adopted Resolution No. RS2001-827, which issued general obligation bonds to fund various capital projects, including the relocation of the Red Grooms Carousel; and
WHEREAS, as a result of the above-mentioned bond resolution, the Metropolitan Government has set aside $500,000 for the relocation of the Red Grooms Carousel; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Government review this decision to determine if it is more economically feasible to purchase the Carousel, rather than expending the $500,000 to relocate it.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Mayor and the Director of Finance to consider purchasing the Red Grooms Tennessee Fox Trot Carousel rather than expending $500,000 to relocate it.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to Mayor Bill Purcell and to Director of Finance David Manning.
Section 3. The Mayor and the Director of Finance are further requested to respond to the Council as to the feasibility of and/or action taken in compliance with the request stated in Section 1 hereof not later than sixty (60) days from the date of the adoption of this Resolution.
Section 4. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
