RESOLUTION NO. RS2004-320

A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Board of Public Education to provide an exception to the magnet school lottery system for children of magnet school teachers.

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Board of Public Education operates sixteen magnet schools available to children of Davidson County that offer special programs for students who demonstrate a high interest in certain academic areas or the arts, or who learn best with the Montessori or Paideia instructional methods; and

WHEREAS, the Board of Public Education utilizes a random lottery to fill available seats in the magnet schools; and

WHEREAS, the Board of Public Education currently does not provide an exception from the lottery system for children of magnet school teachers; and

WHEREAS, allowing children of magnet school teachers to attend the school where their parent teaches without going through the lottery process would ease the burden on these teachers in providing transportation for their children and would allow these teachers to arrive at school earlier to prepare for the day’s instruction; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Board of Public Education allow children of magnet school teachers to attend the school where their parent teaches without participating in the lottery system.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Metropolitan Board of Public Education to provide an exception to the magnet school lottery system for children of magnet school teachers.

Section 2. That the Metropolitan Board of Public Education is further requested to respond to the Council within sixty (60) days from the date of the adoption of this Resolution as to the feasibility of and/or action taken in compliance with the requested stated in Section 1 hereof.

Section 3. That the Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to each member of the Metropolitan Board of Public Education and to Director of Schools Dr. Pedro Garcia.

Section 4. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
