RESOLUTION NO. RS2004-290
A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Department of Public Works to determine the feasibility of using porous pavement as an alternative to conventional asphalt when paving parking areas owned by the Metropolitan Government.
WHEREAS, porous pavement is an economically and environmentally sound alternative to conventional paving; and
WHEREAS, porous pavement is permeable, meaning that water actually leaks through the pavement, which lowers stormwater volume and can reduce pollutants from stormwater runoff by as much as seventy percent; and
WHEREAS, porous pavement is made from the usual paving materials, can be applied using conventional paving equipment, and is expected to cost no more than conventional pavement; and
WHEREAS, porous pavement has been proven to be an effective alternative to convention pavement when used for the surfacing of parking lots and even roadways, and is capable of withstanding repeated freezing and thawing; and
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Parks Department is participating with the Tennessee Valley Authority in a pilot project to use pervious concrete on greenway trails within the Metro Parks system; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Department of Public Works determine the feasibility of using porous pavement as an alternative to conventional pavement for parking lots and low-traffic roadways.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Metropolitan Department of Public Works to determine the feasibility of using porous pavement as an alternative to conventional asphalt when paving parking areas owned by the Metropolitan Government.
Section 2. That the Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to Billy Lynch, the Director of the Department of Public Works.
Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
