RESOLUTION NO. RS2004-286

A resolution recognizing May 2004 as Community Action Month.

WHEREAS, community action agencies were created 40 years ago when the Economic Opportunity act of 1964 was signed into law, and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Action Commission was signed into law by Mayor Beverly Briley on August 28, 1964 through Substitute Bill No. 64-312 “AN ORDINANCE ESTABLISHING A METROPOLITAN ACTION COMMISSION FOR THE PURPOSE OF PARTICIPATING IN A PROGRAM TO MOBILIZE THE HUMAN AND FINANCIAL RESOURCES OF THE NATION AND TO COMBAT POVERTY AND TO RECEIVE AND EXPEND FEDERAL, STATE, AND OTHER FUNDS FOR THIS PURPOSE AND TO INAUGURATE AND ESTABLISH PROGRAMS TO ACCOMPLISH THESE PURPOSES THROUGHOUT THE AREA OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT.”

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Action Commission has a 40-year history as the community action agency for Nashville and Davidson County promoting self-sufficiency for those with limited income; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Action Commission has made an essential contribution to individuals and families in Nashville and Davidson County by providing them with innovative and cost-effective programs; and

WHEREAS, community action agencies are needed as major participants in the reform of welfare system, and welfare reform in Davidson County has benefited from the city’s support of the Metropolitan Action Commission; and

WHEREAS, the limited income citizens of Nashville and Davidson County continue to need opportunities to improve their lives and their living conditions, thus ensuring that all citizens in Nashville and Davidson County are able to live in dignity; and

WHEREAS, Nashville and Davidson County, the entire State of Tennessee, and the whole of these United States of America must continue to wage war on poverty by providing support and opportunities for all citizens in need of assistance.

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize May 2004 as Community Action Month.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the month of May 2004 as Community Action Month, whereby the efforts to reduce poverty in Nashville and Davidson County will be highlighted and whereby those citizens of Nashville and Davidson County who have demonstrated a high level of commitment to the success of the Metropolitan Action Commission and its mission will be honored during the Commission’s Third Annual Community Action Banquet on May 21, 2004.

Section 2. That the Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to Cynthia L. Croom, Executive Director of the Metropolitan Action Commission.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
