RESOLUTION NO. RS2004-279

A resolution recognizing the legacy of Deford Bailey.

WHEREAS, Deford Bailey, a life-long resident of Tennessee, began playing the harmonica at the age of three while being raised in a family of musicians who played what he later referred to as “black hillbilly music”; and

WHEREAS, Deford Bailey “Harmonica Wizard” was a country music pioneer and the first African-American performer to appear on the Grand Ole Opry; and

WHEREAS, when Victor Talking Machine Company came to Nashville to set up the first recording session in Music City, Deford Bailey was among the first artists selected to record; and

WHEREAS, Deford Bailey is well known for his ability to imitate the sounds of a roaring locomotive with his harmonica; and

WHEREAS, he also learned to play the banjo, fiddle, guitar, and mandolin, but the instrument to fame was the harmonica; and

WHEREAS, in remembering Deford Bailey his music continues to live on through his family; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes the accomplishments and contributions of Deford Bailey.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the legacy of Deford Bailey.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to the family of Deford Bailey.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
