RESOLUTION NO. RS2004-275

A resolution recognizing Camp Bordeaux.

WHEREAS, Bordeaux Long-Term Care is in the process of becoming an Eden Facility; and

WHEREAS, Camp Bordeaux is composed of young adults that volunteered to help the elders who reside at Bordeaux Long-Term Care thrive by combating the loneliness, helplessness, and boredom many face when they enter a long-term care facility; and

WHEREAS, the Campers did not see people with disabilities, but friends who had abilities that simply needed to be honed; and

WHEREAS, the Campers youthful enthusiasm and love for the Bordeaux Long-Term Care family has been made evident when residents were encouraged to eat hot dogs with “the works” instead of just plain mustard, throw harder in an egg toss game played with raw eggs, dance in their wheelchairs, and to enjoy life with their same vigor; and

WHEREAS, the Campers asked parents to return early from vacation or skip a family meal at a theme restaurant so they could meet their commitment to the Bordeaux Long-Term Care residents; and

WHEREAS, the Campers used their allowances to purchase holiday gifts for residents and tapped into parental cash reserves when their gift lists exceeded their finances; and

WHEREAS, the Campers have conducted concerts in the dayrooms, encouraging the Bordeaux Long-Term residents to sing along; and

WHEREAS, the Campers worked on life books that chronicle history from the elder’s perspective that were presented to Bordeaux Long-Term Care residents during National Nursing Home Week in May; and

WHEREAS, the Campers have used their youthful ingenuity to bring an element of fresh air to a volunteer program; and

WHEREAS, the Campers have become involved and captivated with the program far beyond what was anticipated; and

WHEREAS, the presence of the Campers at Bordeaux Long-Term Care results in a pace and mood shift; and

WHEREAS, the Campers fervor and commitment have been a priceless addition to Bordeaux Long-Term Care; and

WHEREAS, the Campers have met a long-term care need as only young adults can because in their minds there is nothing they can’t do; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes the fine young adults of Camp Bordeaux.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Camp Bordeaux

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Shara Stodola.
