RESOLUTION NO. RS2004-247

A resolution requesting the Davidson County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly and the State Building Commission to take the action necessary to reinstate the practice of providing lighted text messages and graphics on the exterior of the William R. Snodgrass Tennessee Tower.

WHEREAS, prior its purchase by the State of Tennessee, the William R. Snodgrass Tennessee Tower, formerly known as the National Life Insurance Building and later as the American General Building, routinely displayed community service messages and graphics on the exterior of the building by selectively lighting and darkening windows; and

WHEREAS, these designs and messages became an important tradition for all Nashvillians, and were an appealing and vital part of the Nashville night skyline; and

WHEREAS, these building messages provided invaluable promotional assistance for local nonprofit organizations and community events; and

WHEREAS, reinstating the practice of providing lighted messages on the exterior of the Tennessee Tower would provide a welcoming message to tourists and to motorists passing through Nashville; and

WHEREAS, the State Building Commission addressed this issue at their May 19, 2003 meeting, but no further action has been taken; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the practice of displaying lighted messages and graphics on the exterior of the Tennessee Tower be reinstated.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Davidson County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly and the State Building Commission to take the action necessary to reinstate the practice of providing lighted text messages and graphics on the exterior of the William R. Snodgrass Tennessee Tower.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to each member of the Davidson County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly and to each member of the State Building Commission.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
