A resolution requesting the Mayor, the Department of General Services, the Department of Public Works, the Department of Codes Administration, the Metropolitan Health Department, the Metro Beautification and Environment Commission, the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office, the Juvenile Court and the State Trial Courts to coordinate efforts to clean up public property within the area of the Metropolitan Government.
WHEREAS, Section 2.32.030 of the Metropolitan Code of Laws provides that the Metropolitan Department of General Services is responsible for the care and maintenance of Metropolitan Government public buildings; and
WHEREAS, Section 2.152.040 of the Metropolitan Code of Laws provides that the Metro Beautification and Environment Commission has the power and duty to coordinate and develop plans for improving cleanliness within the area of the Metropolitan Government by beautifying the streets, highways, alleys, lots, yards and other similar places within the Metropolitan Government; and
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Charter provides that the Department of Public Works is responsible for the maintenance and cleaning of roads and right-of-ways, and for the collection and disposal of garbage and other refuse; and
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Charter further provides that the Metropolitan Board of Health has the duty to prevent the creation of nuisances and to take preventative steps to protect the health of the community; and
WHEREAS, the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office uses inmates at the County workhouse to clean up areas within the Metropolitan Government; and
WHEREAS, the Juvenile Court, General Sessions Court, and Criminal Court maintain a program whereby certain misdemeanor criminal and DUI offenders are required to clean up public property as part of their community service; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Mayor, the Department of General Services, the Metro Beautification and Environment Commission, the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office, the Juvenile Court and the State Trial Courts work together to ensure that public property within the area of the Metropolitan Government is kept clean and orderly.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Mayor, the Department of General Services, the Department of Public Works, the Department of Codes Administration, the Metropolitan Health Department, the Metro Beautification and Environment Commission, the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office, the Juvenile Court and the State Trial Courts to coordinate efforts to clean up public property within the area of the Metropolitan Government.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to Mayor Bill Purcell, to Nancy Whittemore, the director of the Department of General Services, to Billy Lynch, the director of the Department of Public Works, to Terry Cobb, the director of the Department of Codes Administration, to Dr. Stephanie Bailey, the Director of Health, to Sheriff Daron Hall, to each member of the Metro Beautification and Environment Commission, to Juvenile Court Judge Betty Adams Green, and to each of the General Sessions and State Trial Court Judges.
Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
