RESOLUTION NO. RS2004-194

A resolution recognizing Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, Congressman John Lewis, and the Faith and Politics Institute for their role in the Sixth Congressional Civil Rights Pilgrimage events in Nashville on February 15, 2004.

WHEREAS, the Sixth Congressional Civil Rights Pilgrimage, hosted by the Washington, D.C.-based Faith and Politics Institute, consisted of a tour of civil rights movement sites in Montgomery, AL, Birmingham, AL, Selma, AL, and Nashville, TN; and

WHEREAS, this bipartisan pilgrimage was hosted by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee and Congressman John Lewis of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, on February 15, 2004, the Sixth Congressional Civil Rights Pilgrimage visited Nashville, Tennessee and included educational workshops, a panel discussion, and the dedication of the Civil Rights Room at the Downtown Nashville Library; and

WHEREAS, a panel discussion titled “The Lessons of Nonviolence: What We Learned from the Nashville Movement,” was held at the Downtown Library and featured several leaders of the 1960 Nashville sit-ins; and

WHEREAS, the Sixth Congressional Civil Rights Pilgrimage brought a number of Congressional leaders to Nashville, Tennessee and provided an opportunity for activists during the sit-ins and Nashville historians to discuss the important role that Nashville played in the Civil Rights movement; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, Congressman John Lewis, and the Faith and Politics Institute for their role in the Sixth Congressional Civil Rights Pilgrimage events in Nashville on February 15, 2004.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, Congressman John Lewis, and the Faith and Politics Institute for their role in the Sixth Congressional Civil Rights Pilgrimage events in Nashville on February 15, 2004.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, to Congressman John Lewis, and to the Faith and Politics Institute.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
