A resolution recognizing March 8-12, 2004, as Reading Recovery Week in Metropolitan Public Schools.
WHEREAS, the Reading Recovery program originated in New Zealand as a first-grade intervention program in reading that is now used throughout the world and in this country since 1984; and
WHEREAS, in the 1994-95 school year the Nashville Public Schools sent Jill Speering to Ohio State University to learn the program and become a highly trained teacher and leader; and
WHEREAS, the Reading Recovery program was implemented in Title I schools in Nashville during the 1995-96 school year and continues today; and
WHEREAS, this program brings the lowest-achieving readers in the first-grade to the average of their class, reduces the number of children referred and served in special education; and
WHEREAS, this program is currently being taught in the following public schools in Davidson County: Bellshire, Chadwell, Cockrill, Goodlettsville, Buena Vista Enhanced Option School, Julia Green, Kirkpatrick Enhanced Option School, Neely’s Bend Elementary, Inglewood, Park Avenue, Enhanced Option School Tusculum and Pennington; and
WHEREAS, Nashville educators are committed to promoting reading at an early age for our children’s future academic success, their preparation for America’s jobs, and the ability to compete in a global economy; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes March 6-10, 2000, as Reading Recovery week in Metropolitan Public Schools.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as. March 8-12, 2004, as Reading Recovery Week in Metropolitan Public Schools.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to the Board of Education, Dr. Pedro Garcia and Jill Speering.
Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
