RESOLUTION NO. RS2004-138


A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Board of Public Education to provide for mock elections in 2004 in our public schools.

WHEREAS, 2004 will be an important year for elections in the country and state, with the election of the President of the United States and Congressional elections; and

WHEREAS, there will also be local elections and elections for the Tennessee General Assembly; and

WHEREAS, such elections provide an educational opportunity for students and children to become informed, understand democracy, and appreciate civic responsibility in voting; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and appropriate that our students in public schools be afforded this opportunity to the voting process during this election year and election years thereafter 2004.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan County Council hereby requests the Metropolitan Board of Public Education to have public schools conduct mock elections in year 2004 and in election years thereafter.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to the Director of Schools and the members of the Metropolitan Board of Public Education.

Section 3. The Director of Schools is further requested to inform the Metropolitan Council of the feasibility and/or the actions taken in compliance with the request contained in Section 1 hereof, not later than sixty (60) days after the adoption of this Resolution.

Section 4. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
