RESOLUTION NO. RS2004-135


A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Transit Authority to display positive statements and/or symbols about Nashville, such as the Metropolitan Government seal or Nashville children's artwork, on bus benches for which no advertising space has been leased.

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Transit Authority has the power and authority pursuant to the Metropolitan Charter for the complete operation of the public transportation system in Nashville and Davidson County; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Transit Authority maintains over 650 bus benches throughout the Nashville Metropolitan area that are available for outdoor advertising for a monthly fee; and

WHEREAS, certain bus benches throughout the Metropolitan Nashville area for which no advertising has been purchased contain a statement as to the availability of the space; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that this vacant bus bench space be used instead to display positive statements and/or symbols about Nashville to promote our great city.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Metropolitan Transit Authority to display positive statements and/or symbols about Nashville, such as the Metropolitan Government seal or Nashville children's artwork, on bus benches for which no advertising space has been leased.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to each member of the Metropolitan Transit Authority and to Paul Ballard, the MTA Chief Executive Officer.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.

Amendment No. 1
To
Resolution No. RS2004-135

Mr. President:

I move to amend Resolution No. RS2004-135 by amending Section 1 by adding the following provision at the end thereof:

“It is further requested that the posting of such symbols or artwork be phased in as advertising space becomes available and that the telephone number for information regarding the leasing of advertising space still be included on the bus benches.”
