RESOLUTION NO. RS2004-127


A resolution recognizing Sister Sandra O. Smithson and Mrs. Mary Smithson Craighead.


WHEREAS, on Wednesday, December 3, 2003, Smithson Craighead Academy was dedicated; and

WHEREAS, Smithson Craighead Academy is named for its founders Sister Sandra O. Smithson, a Franciscan nun, and her sister, Mrs. Mary Smithson Craighead a lifelong educator; and

WHEREAS, Smithson Craighead Academy is Middle Tennessee’s first charter public school opening its doors on August 11, 2003, with 150 students from high priority Metro schools, and is one of only four charter schools in the state; and

WHEREAS, using their vision, skills and energy Sister Sandra O. Smithson and Mrs. Mary Smithson Craighead have elected to work and inspire children that are at-risk; and

WHEREAS, these two sisters began Project Reflect as a remedial education program for disadvantaged children with plans of opening Smithson Craighead Academy, targeting that same population of children - - predominately minority, low-income and at-risk for failing grades; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Sister Sandra O. Smithson and Mrs. Mary Smithson Craighead as public servants of the community and congratulate them on this grand occasion.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Sister Sandra O. Smithson and Mrs. Mary Smithson Craighead.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Sister Sandra O. Smithson and Mrs. Mary Smithson Craighead.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
