RESOLUTION NO. RS2004-124


A resolution recognizing Jack Cawthon for being a community leader as well as an entrepreneur.


WHEREAS, Jack Cawthon, endowed with an independent and entrepreneurial spirit and guided by a clear vision, a strong will to succeed, and uncommon enthusiasm, has owned and operated his own business for 27 years; and

WHEREAS, in 1976, Jack Cawthon began a career in the food service business, opening up Cawthon’s Caterer, Inc., with one cook and himself; and

WHEREAS, recognizing the need for good barbecue in Nashville, Jack Cawthon opened Jack’s Bar-B-Que on the corner of First Avenue at 100 Broadway eventually relocating to 416 Broadway and opening up a second location; and

WHEREAS, some of his specific accomplishments include serving as chairman of the Board of The Downtown District, a board member of the Downtown Partnership, a member of the Central Business Improvement District, organized the Cowan Street and Metro Center Advisory Groups, the Dickerson Road Merchants Association, a board member of the National Caterers Association and Vice-Chair of the National Barbecue Association; and

WHEREAS, he started and organized the Downtown Holiday Decoration Task Force working to get business owners to decorate their buildings for an expanded winter festival concept, which will be developed over the next several years to offer holiday programming and decorations throughout downtown Nashville and enhance Music City as a holiday destination; and

WHEREAS, Jack Cawthon was instrumental in raising money for the Whites Creek Greenway, forming the Skyline North Area Business Council and in the recruitment of members for the Nashville Chamber of Commerce; and

WHEREAS, throughout his career, Mr. Cawthon has always made time for his community as a tireless volunteer, always first in line to lead a community project, work on a fundraiser, or serve in any needed capacity; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes such a public servant like Jack Cawthon and commend him on his success in business, and extend best wishes for his continued success and good fortune.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Jack Cawthon for being a community leader as well as an entrepreneur.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerksl Office is directed to prepare a hand-lettered scroll to be presented to Mr. Jack Cawthon.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
