RESOLUTION NO. RS2003-90


A resolution proclaiming BURNTs anniversary is celebrated in December.


WHEREAS, BURNT formed in 1988 to provide Metropolitan Nashville an alternative to burning solid waste and has continued for fifteen years to work for an environmentally sound solid waste policy; and

WHEREAS, BURNT is a volunteer, non-profit citizens group which improves the environment through citizen involvement with government, business, and academia; and

WHEREAS, BURNT celebrates its 15th Anniversary in December 2003; and

WHEREAS, the Nashville Branch of the NAACP is sponsoring a reception on Thursday, December 4, 2003, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Lentz Health Center to honor BURNT; and

WHEREAS, there will also be a public forum “West Nile Virus: Poison or prevention…Which is the Better Strategy?” with a panel of acclaimed experts at the Lentz Health Center from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 4; and

WHEREAS, many citizens have attended and participated in numerous public hearings on solid waste, clean water, clean indoor air, and use of pesticides as a result of BURNT efforts; and

WHEREAS, BURNT has regularly provided a written record of research based analysis on issues and policy to the Metropolitan Council and other government decision makers; and

WHEREAS, the environmental work of BURNT has stimulated value of commercial real estate in downtown Nashville, the river front, Metro Center and Cockrill Bend; and

WHEREAS, BURNT worked with several Metropolitan Government agencies including the Metropolitan Schools, the Metropolitan Development and Housing Agency, the Parks Department, and the Juvenile Court to implement best management practices for handling toxic pesticides; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council commends BURNT for their yeas of effort as part of our governmental process.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as proclaiming BURNTs anniversary is celebrated in December.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Bruce Wood on behalf of BURNT.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
