RESOLUTION NO. RS2003-9


A resolution requesting the Mayor’s Office, the Metropolitan Board of Public Education, and the Director of Schools to establish guidelines for and implement a performance incentive program for teachers and other Board of Education employees.

WHEREAS, over the past several years the Council, the Mayor, the Board of Public Education, and the Director of Schools have demonstrated a commitment to public education in the form of increased funding for schools and programs to increase student performance and achievement; and

WHEREAS, in order for a school system to succeed, it must be able to attract and retain the highest quality teachers, administrators, and support staff; and

WHEREAS, performance incentives would greatly assist the Metropolitan Board of Public Education in attracting and retaining qualified personnel; and

WHEREAS, such incentives could be based on measurable criteria including attendance, performance evaluations, student performance and achievement test scores, involvement in extra-curricular activities, and the development of innovative initiatives; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Mayor’s Office, the Board of Public Education, and the Director of Schools work collaboratively to develop guidelines for such performance incentives.


NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:


Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Mayor’s Office, the Board of Public Education, and the Director of Schools to establish guidelines for and implement a performance incentive program for teachers and other Board of Education employees.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to the Mayor, to each member of the Board of Public Education, and to the Director of Schools.


Section 3. The Mayor’s Office, the Board of Public Education, and the Director of Schools are further requested to inform the Metropolitan Council within sixty (60) days of the adoption of this Resolution regarding the feasibility of and/or the action taken in compliance with the request in Section 1 hereof.

Section 4. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
