RESOLUTION NO. RS2003-86


A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Board of Public Education and the Director of Schools to consider using the existing lottery list to fill vacancies in magnet schools during the first five days of the school year.

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Board of Public Education operates a highly successful magnet school program for students within Nashville and Davidson County; and

WHEREAS, the enhanced curriculum provided by the magnet schools often results in a greater number of students desiring to attend those schools than then enrollment capacity allows; and

WHEREAS, to address the issue regarding the high number of applicants for the magnet schools, the Board of Education has implemented a lottery system from which qualified applicants are selected; and

WHERERAS, the Board of Education currently only uses the lottery list up until the day before the school year starts; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Board of Education use the existing lottery list to fill vacancies in magnet schools for a period of time after the school year starts.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Board of Public Education and the Director of Schools to consider using the existing lottery list to fill vacancies in magnet schools during the first five days of the school year.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to each member of the Board of Public Education and to the Director of Schools.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
