RESOLUTION NO. RS2003-8


A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Traffic and Parking Commission and the Mayor’s Office to study the parking adjacent to the new Shelby Street pedestrian bridge and to take the appropriate action necessary to provide free parking to the public while using the bridge.

WHEREAS, the Shelby Street pedestrian bridge over the Cumberland River was recently opened to the public for use by walkers, joggers, and bikers; and

WHEREAS, the new bridge provides easy access for pedestrians between the east bank and the west bank of the Cumberland River and connects the Shelby Bottoms Greenway with the Downtown Greenway; and

WHEREAS, many residents of Nashville are already making use of the bridge for the purposes of exercising and accessing the restaurants and businesses in the lower Broadway area; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that free parking be provided to the public in the vicinity of the Shelby Street pedestrian bridge on both the east bank and west bank sides to encourage use of the bridge.


NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:


Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Metropolitan Traffic and Parking Commission and the Mayor’s Office to study the parking adjacent to the new Shelby Street pedestrian bridge and to take the appropriate action necessary to provide free parking to the public while using the bridge.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to each Member of the Metropolitan Traffic and Parking Commission and to the Mayor.

Section 3. The Traffic and Parking Commission and the Mayor’s Office are further requested to inform the Council within sixty (60) days of the adoption of this Resolution as to the feasibility of and/or actions taken in compliance with the request in Section 1 hereof.

Section 4. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
