RESOLUTION NO. RS2003-7


A resolution requesting the Mayor, the Governor, the Davidson County Delegation to the General Assembly and the Tennessee Department of Transportation to implement a program for additional inspections of bridges, overpasses, and entrance/exit ramps within Davidson County, and to install a warning system near bridges and overpasses.

WHEREAS, the Tennessee Department of Transportation currently inspects bridges and overpasses for structural integrity every two years; and

WHEREAS, on September 10, 2003, a retaining wall supporting the ramp from 28th Avenue North to westbound I-40 collapsed onto the off-ramp; and

WHEREAS, the structural integrity of bridges and overpasses is paramount to the safety of motorists in Nashville and Davidson County; and

WHEREAS, more frequent inspections of bridges, overpasses, and entrance/exit ramps, and an automated warning system would enhance the safety of citizens of Davidson County; and

WHEREAS, such warning system might include flashing lights and an audible tone to warn motorists of the dangerous condition in the event a bridge, overpass, or ramp collapses or becomes unsafe.


NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:


Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Mayor, the Governor, the Davidson County Delegation to the General Assembly and the Tennessee Department of Transportation to implement a program for additional inspections of bridges, overpasses, and entrance/exit ramps within Davidson County, and to install a warning system near bridges and overpasses.

Section 2. That the Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to the Mayor, the Governor, each member of the Davidson County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly, and to the Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
