RESOLUTION NO. RS2003-62
A resolution requesting the Mayor’s Office, the Metropolitan Board of
Public Education, and the Director of Schools to base the design of new school
buildings to be constructed on the expected future growth of the area from
which the students will attend to avoid the overcrowding of schools and the
use of portable classrooms.
WHEREAS, the Council has made a strong commitment to public education in Nashville and Davidson County by substantially increasing the funding for the Board of Education’s operating budget and by approving funding for various capital improvement projects for schools; and
WHEREAS, certain new schools in Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County have been overcrowded since opening requiring the use of portable classrooms; and
WHEREAS, portable classrooms do not promote an ideal learning environment for children and the Metropolitan Council desires that portable classrooms only be used when there are no other reasonable alternative circumstances; and
WHEREAS, giving increased consideration to the projected population growth for particular areas within Davidson County when planning for the construction of new schools would help ensure that the new schools have adequate space for all students and portable classrooms would not be required.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. That
the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as requesting the Mayor’s
Office, the Board of Public Education, and the Director of Schools to base
the design of new school buildings to be constructed on
the expected future growth of the area from which the students will attend
to avoid the overcrowding of schools and the use of portable classrooms.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this
Resolution to the Mayor, to each member of the Board of Public Education, and
to the Director of Schools.
Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
